What is Intellectual Disability?
Intellectual disability is a term used when a person has certain limitations in mental functioning and in skills such as communicating, taking care of him or herself, and social skills. These limitations will cause a child to learn and develop more slowly than a typical child.
Children with intellectual disabilities (sometimes called cognitive disabilities or, previously, mental retardation, mentally challenged and mentally handicapped etc.) may take longer to learn to speak, walk, and take care of their personal needs such as dressing, grooming and eating. They are likely to have trouble learning in normal school. They will learn, but it will take them longer. There may be certain things that they cannot learn. They are poor at cognitive skills (thinking, reasoning and judgement) and social skills.
What are the Signs of Intellectual Disability?
There are many signs of an intellectual disability. For example, children with an intellectual disability may:
-
sit up, crawl, or walk later than other children;
-
learn to talk later, or have trouble speaking,
-
find it hard to remember things,
-
not understand how to pay for things,
-
have trouble understanding social rules,
-
have trouble seeing the consequences of their actions,
-
have trouble solving problems, and/or
-
have trouble thinking logically.
Activities

Surveys
Initially, we conducted surveys with specially trained staff to identify intellectually disabled in and around our area at the same time we dissipate knowledge about intellectual disabilities and provide counselling at the home level.
It is completely different from normal education, so, we may say it is special education which is applied by specially trained teachers, who are well trained in all aspects such as speech intervention, physio therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, behavior modification, and counselling etc.
Introduction
what is a special education? Who need it ? These are question may arise. The special education is need for Intellectual Disabled to teach and train them with special educational techniques for those who require special needs. Generally we can recognize such type of children through some observations such as….
· We call a person by his name within 2 to 3 feet distance but the person not responds.
· The person may not give answers to your question correctly or may give irrelevant answers.
· The person may not concentrate on topics or lessons.
· The person may not able to perform the activities of daily living such as brushing, combing, dressing, toileting , bathing, and eating etc.
· May not perform general or simple tasks when compare to others of same age level group.
· Forget the learn tasks very frequently even though we teach it many times and do the same task repeatedly.
· Taking very long time to learn a task when compare to others.
· Unable to concentrate on etc.
Special Education is the individually planned and systematically monitored arrangement of teaching procedures, adapted equipment and materials, accessible settings, and other interventions designed to help learners with special needs achieve the greatest possible personal self-sufficiency and success in school and community.

Speech Intervention
These children have communication problems. They cannot express or share their feelings normally. Their verbal and non-verbal communication is poor, and one may not understand them. In speech intervention with special education techniques, we identify his entry-level and plan according to their stage of communication.

Behavior Modification
Generally when we called a behavior is problematic?
* A behavior which disturbs others
* A behavior which disturbs the environment
* A behavior which interferes in his learning process
Behavior problems are genetic and not generated by birth. These are adopted by natural situation in his environment, and gradually increased or decreased by its stimulated situations. No body in this nature behaves neither good or bad all are adopted by responses of stimuli.
Early Intervention
Early identification of problems of child and start early intervention is always best to help the child to grow both intellectually and physically.
